That One Part

I’ve noticed I’m the kind of person who buys a movie because I pass it in the store and remember this one great part in the movie that made me love the movie, pick it up, and buy it. All it takes is for me to remember that one great part. I mean yeah I’m not going to buy a $20 movie just because I liked one part but anything under $10 definitely. Especially if it’s marked at a luring price such as $7.99 or the best one $5. How you could pass up a $5 movie? I know I can’t.

Take for instance Becoming Jane with Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy. It didn’t get rave reviews or even last in the theaters that long but after renting it and watching it once I knew I had to get it. About half way through the movie there is a scene that made the movie a must have. After trying to deny her feeling for a man she knows she shouldn’t have feeling for Jane can’t help but be ecstatic when he cuts in to be her dancing partner. The emotion she shows at that moment made me realize I had to get that movie. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone looking for a romance without the typical ending.

Another movie like this is Wanted starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy. It’s just a coincidence that James McAvoy is in both of these movies. Like I mentioned in an earlier blog I see movies sometimes for the actors that star in them. The special effects throughout the whole movie, Wanted, are fantastic but the one point that I knew I wanted to buy the movie is a great special effects scene at the end. I won’t say exactly what part because I don’t want to give away any end plot points but this was amazing. I would definitely recommend this action packed movie to anyone looking for adventure.

What To See..

After looking at the Top 10 movies in theaters right now on Fandango.com and realized that it’s been way to long since I saw a movie in theaters. The last movie I saw in theaters was Twilight in early January and Marley and Me on Christmas Day. Both great movies. Still can’t believe I haven’t seen Gran Torino yet it’s been rated as a ‘Must See’ by Fandango users. I mean its Clint Eastwood how can you not see it right? Paul Blart: Mall Cop has made over $38.1 Million at the box office so far. Comedy’s I don’t usually see in the theater just cause I know that I’ll have to watch it twice to find it really funny. It’s easier just to rent it watch it one night then watch it again the next day.

As mentioned in my post A Little Romance I am looking forward to seeing Revolutionary Road with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio and hope to be able to see it sometime this week. Gran Torino next and then I’m in the mood for a scary movie but I haven’t made up my mind between The Uninvited and The Unborn both have scary previews but previews can be deceiving. The Uninvited star Emily Browning has held her own in other scary movies including Darkness Falls and Ghost Ship when she was younger. There are no big names in The Unborn except for a few actors who have held TV show rolls. The Unborn and The Univited were both rated ‘So So’ by voters on Fandango.com. Not that I really base my opinions on movies from what other people say.

Also, I know I said that I’m not accustomed to seeing comedies in the theaters but New In Town with Renee Zellweger looks to be pretty good. It’s more of a romantic comedy so that’s probably why I’m willing to make an exception.

Trilogies

For me nothing is better than a trilogy or even sequels for that matter. Okay so it has to be worth a second or third installment but the ones that pull it off are fantastic. For instance, what goes better with a Sunday full of homework? The Bourne Trilogy of course. Not only does Matt Damon get better and better every movie but the quality of the film and adventure never gets old. When watching the Bourne movies you can’t watch just one. The end of Identity leaves you wanting more and Supremacy is popped in right away same with Ultimatum.

There are a number of trilogy series that have been very successful:

The Addams Family (1991-1998)
Austin Powers (1997-2002)
Back to the Future (1985-1990)
Blade (1998-2004)
The God Father (1972-1990)
High School Musical (2006-2008)
Jurassic Park (1993-2001)
The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)
The Matrix (1999-2003)
The Mighty Ducks (1992-1996)
Mission Impossible (1996-2006)
Pirates of the Caribbean (2003-2007)
Poltergeist (1982-1988)
Resident Evil (2002-2007)
Rush Hour (1998-2007)
Scream (1996-2000)
Spiderman (2002-2007)
Transporter (2002-2008)
X Men (2000-2006)

This isn’t even including any Disney animated trilogies that have been made over the history of the company.

As I mentioned with respect to the Bourne trilogy once you watch one can’t stop. That goes for most of these as well. Which makes getting into a trilogy great. You get to know the characters and if you cant get enough no worry there is more to come with the rest of the films. The only downside to trilogies is that you have begun to enjoy them so much that it makes them even harder to stop watching when they are over. I always get anxious at the end of the third movie for a cliff hanger ending in hopes that they will surprise me with a fourth installment. The downside to a cliff hanger ending is if there really never is a fourth installment.

Quite A Time Saver

There are several movies I remember seeing the previews for and thought to myself ‘Oh I want to see that!’ but never got around to it. Those are the movies I’ll pay money to rent. There are however those movies where you see the preview and you think, “Really? Would anyone really pay to see that?” Well the other night sitting around with some friends we were going through a list of horror movies online. The popular ones we’d seen but of course there were a few low budget unpopular ones we had never even heard of.

Our interests were not peaked enough that we would want to actually go rent these no name horror flicks so we found a way to get a 5 minute overview of the entire plot. Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia with little credit to its named because anyone can post anything they’d like to about a topic. Simply by searching the title of a movie we wanted to ‘watch’, really read, we were able to get an entire recap of the movie courtesy of well anyone who wrote on the link.

One movie we had heard of but never had any intention of seeing is Silent Hill.

Fandango.com Movie Overview: “Rose cannot accept that her daughter, Sharon, has a fatal disease. Against her husband's will, she flees with her child, with the intention of taking her to a faith healer. Along the way, she drives through a portal in reality, which lands her in the deserted town of Silent Hill. Rose loses Sharon there, and she follows what she believes to be the silhouette of her daughter all over town.”

After reading a preview of a movie we decided it wasn’t worth ruining the entire movie and looking good enough that we would rent it. Haven’t had a chance to see it yet but it’s on my list now. Not to say it’s probably not predictable or anything but kids do creepy pretty well. We’ll see…

A Little Romance

Everyone watches movies. Everyone has an opinion on movies. Why leave the critiquing just up to the professionals? My blog is going to be occasional movie reviews, updates on the latest releases, and places to go to get the movies you've been looking for.

Movies are a passion of mine, I may not know everything there is to know but I certainly have my own personal opinion. I’m willing to watch just about any movie there is but I must say the cast plays a big part in choosing a movie for me. I’m really impressed when an on-screen duo is so successful they are used again in other movies. For example Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio were just used for the second time together in Revolutionary Road after their first VERY successful appearance together in Titanic. I have yet to see Revolutionary Road but it’s on my list. Another on-screen duo that has been featured numerous time are Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. This pair starred in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail. Of course there is always Julia Roberts and Richard Gere who made their mark as a delightful on-screen couple in Pretty Woman followed by another hit Runaway Bride.

Keeping with the romance theme a movie I would recommend renting this weekend is Sex and the City. Although you may not follow the TV show religiously there the movie allows anyone unfamiliar with the show a peek into why the show attracts as many viewers as it does. Stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon were given a B+ rating for this romantic drama. It is rated R and runs about 2 ½ hours.

Looking to rent a movie but not spend tons of money and worry about return dates. $1 DVD rentals a night, check out redbox.com for locations.
